Your application for a new ID book can be submitted at any Department of Home Affairs office or South African consular office abroad. The Department’s main office is located in Pretoria, so all applications should be sent there. At that location, your fingerprints will be entered into or matched against the National Population Register. Once your application has been processed and your ID book has been issued, you can pick it up from the location where you submitted it.
Receive sms status updates
In order to receive regular SMS updates on the status of your application, you must provide your cellphone number in your application. Send the word “ID” followed by your ID number to the short code 32551 for the SMS updates. Each SMS you send will cost you R1.
